SONGS OF THE EARTH:  A Charlotte Premiere

Charlotte, NC – February 4, 2016 –  The Firebird Arts Alliance presents the CHARLOTTE PREMIERE of one of western art music’s greatest compositions – Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), in Arnold Schönberg’s brilliant orchestration for 15 players.

The piece includes some of the composer’s most original and passionate music, music of overwhelming despair, longing, love and departure.

Why these pieces?  “The Firebird Arts Alliance consistently picks music unique to Charlotte, pieces you may not have another opportunity to hear.  Whether new or particularly complex, we strive to provide an experience that won’t be duplicated in this region,”  says David Tang, Artistic Director.

To further bring the music to life, the performance will be accompanied by projected Chinese calligraphy by master Zhao Hong and fine art.  David continues, “We broaden the understanding and impact of the musical pieces and visual arts by combining the two.  It creates a powerful and emotional experience, perfect for the depth of this particular music.”

The concert also features Arnold Schönberg’s rarely-performed hymn to world peace – Friede auf Erden – one of the greatest works ever written for a cappella choir.

Featuring:  the Firebird Arts Sinfonia; VOX; Daniel Shirley, Tenor; and Neal Sharpe, Bass-baritone.  Co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University.

Taking place on Saturday, March 5th at 7:30 p.m. at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Rd, Charlotte NC.

General admission is $15, students and seniors $10. Tickets at songsoftheearth.eventzilla.net.
